Eiko has always enjoyed language and literature. In a college in Tokyo, she majored in Russian Literature, learning Russian under the strict guidance of two Russian ladies who escaped to Japan from the Revolution. When her husband's job took the family to Minnesota, USA, Eiko became a student in the University of Minnesota, majoring in English language and literature. Of all the courses she had to take for getting her second degree, she says she liked American Poetry best. While teaching English in a junior college in Toyota city, Japan, she encountered renku in a lecturer's room. One of the part-time lecturers of Japanese literature there was a well-known renku poet. In addition to her schooling, Eiko is currently learning Japanese literature through renku activities. She is one of the vice presidents of AIR (Association for International Renku).
